General strategies for the synthesis of metal-based aerogels, including monometallic, non-precious metal-doped, polymetallic-doped, and nanometallic-doped carbon aerogels are presented. In addition, the latest applications of several of the aforementioned metal aerogels in electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction are reviewed. Finally, the future of large-scale electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction technology applications is discussed. And workable options for the improvement of presented techniques are suggested.
