A chip off the old MOF: A CO2 molecule can exchange with the lattice-coordinated H2O molecules and side-on coordinate with the metal Ni sites on Ni−BDC surface simultaneously; finally this breaks the interlayer hydrogen bond of bulk Ni−BDC and helps to form 2D MOF.
