A carbon-coated CuOx catalyst achieves a remarkable ethanol partial current density of 166 mA cm−2 with 46 % Faradaic efficiency, substantially higher than those over most reported copper-based catalysts. The surface carbon coating can effectively stabilize the abundant Cu+ species, thus facilitate C−C coupling by improving *CO adsorption, and tune the key intermediate *HOCCH in the hydrogenation pathway toward ethanol production.
