The anisotropic crystal CsH2C6N9⋅H2O consists of (H2C6N9) anion units in which the π orbitals of the constituent (C3N3) ring and linear −(N−C≡N)− moieties are cooperative. As a result, the crystal exhibits very large birefringence of up to 0.55@550 nm. This attribute enables it to efficiently divide an incident ray into different polarized rays (o ray and e ray).
