Metal Triflates as Catalysts in Organic Synthesis: Determination of Their Lewis Acidity by Mass Spectrometry

For coupling reactions with strong Lewis acids, the choice of the best catalyst is very dependent on the functional group to be activated and on the coupling process. For a better understanding of the interaction between organic functional groups and catalysts, the development of electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) reveals to be an interesting tool. Affinity scales for some metal triflates in the presence of organic ligands are proposed, based on competitive complexation.
