A Lewis-acid catalyzed stereoinvertive nucleophilic substitution at the quaternary carbon stereocenter of cyclopropyl ketones and cyclopropyl carbinol derivatives is reported. A variety of tertiary alkyl bromides, chlorides and azides are prepared in good yields with excellent stereopurity via a postulated bicyclobutonium intermediate.
