Two I-IR799 derivatives are NIR-absorbing probes that can be activated for photodynamic therapy (PDT). I-IR799-IMC, containing indomethacin, exhibits superior cancer targeting and PDT performance relative to another probe containing celecoxib (I-IR799-CXB). I-IR799-IMC can be rapidly internalized via OATPs and recognized by cancer cells which is demonstrated to be related to COX-2 levels.
