Towards dendrite and side-reaction free Zn anode: On the back of a comprehensive critique of the aqueous Zn2+/Zn electrochemistry, different strategies for suppressing side reactions and dendrite formation at the Zn anode in aqueous Zn-ion batteries are systematically reviewed. Strategic recommendations are provided to coordinate research and development efforts and raise attention toward technical and functional needs for the practical development of the technology.
