Abstract

A simple and efficient method has been developed for the synthesis of benzimidazo[2,1-a]iso­quinolin-6(5H)-ones via copper-catalyzed reaction of N-methacryloyl-2-arylbenzimidazoles with azobis­(isobutyronitrile) or 1,1′-azobis(cyclohexanecarbonitrile). The proposed protocol tolerates a variety of functional groups, and the corresponding benzimidazo[2,1-a]isoquinolin-6(5H)-ones bearing a cyano group were obtained in 41–83% yields. A tandem radical addition/cyclization pathway is proposed for this transformation.
