Strong Ligand Stabilization Based on π-Extension in a Series of Ruthenium Terpyridine Water Oxidation Catalysts

The correlation between the stability of a monodentate chloride ligand and the catalytic water oxidation performance of a set of ruthenium(II) terpyridine complexes based on π-extension of a bipyridine is investigated. The findings are supported by theoretical calculations and show a significant dependence of the stability of the chloride ligand on the π-extension and, hence, a decrease in the catalytic turnover number and turnover frequency.
