A simple, efficient and scalable method for the synthesis of 5-hydroxy-2(5H)-furanone from furan has been developed on a multigram scale. Oxidation of furan has been performed using oxone as the sole oxidant and water as a solvent, which makes this protocol practical and thus industrially applicable.
