Copper acetylides, Cu2C2, have been proposed as catalytically active species in reactions with acetylene by Walter Reppe decades ago. The present study succeeded for the first time with the doubtless experimental identification of the explosive material as active species in the ethynylation of formaldehyde to 1,4-butynediol by correlation with the performance of supported Cu/Bi/SiO2 and bulk Cu2C2 catalysts.
