The MTW-type (Mobil TWelve) zeolites possess unique non-interconnecting 12-membered ring tubular-like linear channels. Such special pore structure and coking resistance granted great potential applications in industrial catalysis for MTW zeolites e.g. methanol–to-olefins, hydro-isomerization of paraffins, selective synthesis of high-valued aromatics and olefins. Aimed at precise control of the pore and acid properties of the MTW zeolites for more industrial catalysis, on the basis of our previous works and extensive reference investigations, the present review summarized both the experimental and theoretical progresses on the MTW zeolite preparation, modification to the pore structure and acid properties as well as the catalytic applications. The specialty of the MTW zeolites is the unique one dimensional 12-member ring channel, which provides the potential for selective catalysis. The point is that both the pore structure and acidity of the zeolites function in the catalytic reaction. Successful industrial catalysis application of the zeolites should consider the multi-factor, including the precise matching of the pore structure and acidity of the zeolites, expense for preparation and modification, and catalytic performances etc. The important roles which theoretical investigations play are providing helpful forward insights for experiments, and more efforts should be paid for the conjunction of experiments and computations.
