Lithium Organoaluminate Complexes as Catalysts for the Conversion of CO2 into Cyclic Carbonates

Four lithium organoaluminate complexes containing bidentate pyrrolyl ligand were successfully synthesized, and their structural features were provided. These complexes were used as catalysts for chemical fixation of carbon dioxide with epoxides under mild conditions. Among them, complex {[C4H3N(AlEt3)(2‐CH2NHLit Bu)][C4H3NLi(2‐CH2NHt Bu)]}2 (4 ), in conjunction with tetrabutyl‐ammonium iodide (TBAI) as cocatalyst, exhibits higher catalytic activities than other lithium organoaluminates. Epoxides reacted with CO2 at 50 °C and 1 atm pressure to give the corresponding cyclic carbonates in yields of 62–99 %.
