Measurement of wettability on rhombohedral pattern fabricated by using 3D-UEVT

A micro-grid surface pattern was fabricated to evaluate its wettability properties. The micro-grid surface pattern is termed as a rhombohedral pattern. The rhombohedral pattern was applied to a micro-structured surface, which was fabricated using a novel method namely 3D-UEVT (three-dimensional ultrasonic elliptical vibration texturing). The rhombohedral pattern consists of a micro-pillar pattern based on a perpendicular micro-groove pattern. The rhombohedral pattern was manufactured with different pitch dimensions with a gap of 150–300 µm. Each micro-groove pattern has a depth approximately 10 ± 2 µm. A smooth surface was also manufactured using milling operations to compare the wettability behavior. The wettability measurement has been conducted on a horizontal and an inclined surface. These wettability measurements indicate that the rhombohedral pattern improves slightly the wettability performance compared to the smooth surface by indication of water contact angle (WCA) degeneration.
