5. Sentient Multimedia Systems and Visual Intelligence
期刊:Multimedia Tools and Applications
客座编辑:Bernardo Breve; Stefano Cirillo; Walter Balzano; Yang Zou
Sentient Multimedia Systems are distributed systems capable of interacting with the environment by gathering, processing, interpreting, storing, and retrieving multimedia information originated from sensors, robots, actuators, and other information sources. These systems can exploit Visual Languages to improve communication with people in real-life scenarios, such as smart cities and healthcare. Such languages, combined with intelligent, experience-based, multimedia systems, fall in the area of Visual Intelligence, empowering people to understand how machines process the data from multimedia systems. Moreover, Visual Intelligence comprises all the processes enabling machines to analyze and interpret multimedia data. The combination of sentient multimedia systems and Visual Intelligence has given rise to exciting new applications in fields as diverse as healthcare, education, marketing, games, and automotive. For example, instead of relying only on textual data to create a self-driving car, customers can provide data about the routes they take in a day along with images or videos. Thus, people can help intelligent systems to be trained on a variety of new multimedia sources. This Special Issue is inspired by but not limited to the 28th International DMS Conference on Visualization and Visual Languages (DMSVIVA2022), which will be virtually held from June 29-30, 2022, and will include extended versions of a selection of the best papers presented at the conference. We also expect high-quality contributions from authors who did not attend the conference, and in particular, papers addressing novel aspects of visual languages and multimedia systems that significantly benefit from the creative use of space, technologies, and multimedia data (e.g., visual, audio, pen, voice, image, etc.).
6. Forest carbon
期刊:Scientific Reports
客座编辑:Akihiko Ito; Meisam Tabatabaei; Quan Wang
Mitigation goals for the climate crisis will only be achieved with a substantial contribution from forests. To achieve this, however, we would need to increase our understanding of the dynamics, magnitude, drivers, and spatial distribution of carbon fluxes across terrestrial ecosystems, especially forests, and how they can be managed. This is essential for strategies to reduce carbon emissions and enhance carbon removals, and would also help guide climate policy, and the various actors developing nature-based solutions. This Collection aims to showcase the latest advances on Earth system models, terrestrial biosphere models, forest carbon monitoring, biomass carbon stocks and turnover, forest demography, and carbon allocation.
7. Next Generation of Smart, Sustainable and Resilient Manufacturing Systems
期刊:Scientific Reports
客座编辑:David S. Cochran; Kerstin Johansen; Erwin Rauch; Susanne Vernim
In addition to the increasing introduction of digitalization in manufacturing, the sustainable and resilient design of next generation manufacturing systems and value chains is one of the major challenges for the future. After years of focusing mostly on efficiency and productivity, the concept of the triple bottom line pursues the goal of achieving a balance between economic, ecological and social sustainability in manufacturing. This approach includes concepts like circular economy in manufacturing, digitalization as an enabler for sustainable manufacturing as well as human-centred manufacturing concepts and their assessment. The recent unforeseen disruptive events (e.g. Suez Canal blockade, Covid-19) have also shown how crucial it is to increase resilience in manufacturing systems to mitigate the impact of unexpected disruptions.
This Collection will gather research Articles highlighting the latest advances and technologies to facilitate resilience, circular economy and sustainable practices in the manufacturing industry.
