BMC Geriatrics is an open access journal publishing original peer-reviewed research articles in all aspects of the health and healthcare of older people, including the effects of healthcare systems and policies. The journal also welcomes research focused on the aging process, including cellular, genetic, and physiological processes and cognitive modifications.
BMC Geriatrics considers research on health and healthcare in populations aged 65 years and above. Terms like "seniors", "elderly", "old person" or "the aged" should be avoided. Terms such as "older persons", "older people", "older adults", "older patients" or "the older population" are preferred.
We welcome manuscripts in the following broad areas of research:
Biology and technology including studies on biological mechanisms, diagnostic instruments, use of technology in geriatric settings, biology of aging, and genetics.
Health services research including studies on management of geriatric healthcare, practitioner/nursing viewpoints, intensive care, healthcare systems, emergency care, prescribing practices, and decision making.
General geriatric medicine and surgery including studies of general medicine and surgical intervention, such as cardiology, respiratory disorders, gastroenterology, dentistry, emergency medicine, and urology.
Neurology, stroke and cognition, including studies on all neurological topics. We welcome research on Alzheimer’s disease, cognition, stroke, dementias, and wandering behaviors.
Physical functioning, physical health, and activity, including studies on activities of daily living, frailty, fractures, falls, exercise, posture, gait, hip complications, and complications with general bodily functions.
Psychology, psychiatry and quality of life including studies on quality of life, depression, loneliness, family matters, relationships, psychological wellbeing and mental health.
Public health, nutrition and epidemiology including studies examining dietary or nutritional factors in relation to disease occurrence, research on social determinants of health, digital health, chronic disease epidemiology, and health behaviors.
BMC Geriatrics does not make editorial decisions on the basis of the interest of a study or its likely impact. Studies must be scientifically valid; for research articles this includes a scientifically sound research question, the use of suitable methods and analysis, and following community-agreed standards relevant to the research field. |
