Transactions of the Indian Institute of Metals is devoted to the publication of selected reviews on contemporary topics and original research articles that contribute to the advancement of ferrous and non-ferrous process metallurgy, materials engineering, physical, chemical and mechanical metallurgy, welding science and technology, surface engineering and characterisation, materials development,  thermodynamics and kinetics, materials modelling and to other allied branches of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering.
Transactions of the Indian Institute of Metals also serves as a forum for rapid publication of recent advances in all the branches of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering. The technical content of the journal is scrutinised by the Editorial Committee composed of experts from various disciplines of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering. Editorial Advisory Board provides valuable advice on technical matters related to the publication of Transactions.
The articles are published under four categories:
Technical papers (TP) presenting original work and embodying the results of extensive theoritical, laboratory, plant or field investigations.
Technical notes (TN) are in the form of short communications (normally not exceeding 1000 words) dealing with new experimental or theoritical findings or comments on topics of current interest. Critical discussion of articles which have appeared in recent issues of the transactions and replies to such comments will also fall under this category.
Overviews, roughly the length of a Technical paper, reflecting the author’s perception and views on a topic of their expertise.
Review papers embodying extensive critical assessment of the state of the art in a topic or theme are also published as and when invited from specialists. Voluntary offers for such reviews are also considered.
The journal publishes occasionally special issues on current topics of interest. Papers for special issues are generally invited by the editorial board. Papers presented at National and International Symposia are also considered for publication as special issues after peer review.
Awards
All the articles classified as technical papers and technical notes that appear in Transactions of the Indian Institute of Metals in the calendar year will be considered for  the best paper awards: The Binani Gold Medal is given for the best paper published in the category of   Non-Ferrous Group, while SAIL Gold Medal is awarded for the best paper published in Transactions. The Pandya Silver Medal is awarded to the best paper published in the Transactions by a member of IIM below the age of 35 years as a single author.
