Editor-in-ChiefGene P Siegal M.D., Ph.D, is an experimental and diagnostic musculoskeletal pathologist whose research focuses on Cancer Biology. He is the Immediate Past President of the Arthur Purdy Stout Society of Surgical Pathologists, Past Chair of the Fellow Council of the American Society of Clinical Pathology and he has served or is serving on the Executive Committees of the Association of Directors of Anatomic and Surgical Pathology, the American Society for Investigative Pathology, and the American Society of Clinical Pathology. He is currently the Chair of the Intersociety Pathology Council and a long-time participant in the academic life of the Academy. His research interests are tumor-matrix interactions during angiogenesis and tumor invasion and metastasis. Efforts by his group have been directed towards developing new reliable in vitro model systems for studying the effect of nutritional and other factors on cancer progression in humans. In separate studies he and his associates have been exploring how carbohydrate associated cell surface molecules modulate tumor cell interactions with the environment surrounding cancer cells. He has also participated in multiple gene therapy studies utilizing a variety of distinct strategies including mutation compensation, genetic immunopotentiation, and molecular chemotherapy to treat solid human neoplasms. His most recently funded NIH grant involves the development of a conditionally replicating canine adenovirus model for the study host-vector interactions for more effective antitumor oncolytic effects using osteosarcoma as the model. Dr. Siegal's clinical research interests have focused on studies of bone tumors and related conditions, a field in which he is a recognized world authority, having shared with M.J. Pitt, the Farrell Prize of the International Skeletal Society in 2002. He is the author of nearly 600 peer-reviewed manuscripts, book chapters, abstracts and other professional writings. Managing EditorCatherine M Ketcham, Ph.D, has been Managing Editor of Laboratory Investigation since 2003. She conducts independent research in the field of bibliometrics and is also the Technical Director of the University of Florida Molecular Tissue Bank. She earned her Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Florida. Her postdoctoral studies were carried out at Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine. She then spent seven years in the San Diego biotechnology community focusing on manufacturing issues and business development. Subsequently, she was a research and development scientist associated with the University of Florida Interdisciplinary Center for Biotechnology Research and the Sid Martin Biotechnology Development Incubator before joining the Pathology department. Editorial AssistantMartha W Simmons Birmingham, AL Senior Associate EditorsRobert W Hardy, Ph.D, is an Associate Professor of Pathology at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), where he is also Section Head of Clinical Chemistry. He has secondary appointments in the departments of Physiology and Biophysics, Nutrition Sciences and Department of Critical and Diagnostic Care. He received the Ph.D. degree from the University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada in 1988 and completed post doctoral fellowships at Washington University and UAB. He joined the faculty at UAB in 2001. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Clinical Chemistry, as well as member of the American Board of Clinical Chemistry, and a Fellow of the National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry. He has authored over 50 peer-reviewed publications, reviews, book chapters and serves on grant review panels for the NIH, Department of Defense, and the American Institute for Cancer Research. Research in his laboratory is focused on understanding how individual fatty acids affect cancer progression and insulin resistance at the cellular and molecular level.
