收稿范围
Phytotherapy Research is a monthly, international journal for the publication of original research papers, reviews and letters on medicinal plant research. Key areas of interest are pharmacology, toxicology, and the clinical applications of herbs and natural products in medicine, from case histories to full clinical trials, including studies of herb-drug interactions and other aspects of the safety of herbal medicines. Papers concerned with the effects of common food ingredients and standardised plant extracts, including commercial products, are particularly welcome, as are mechanistic studies on isolated natural products.

Papers dealing with the pharmacology and screening of crude or uncharacterised extracts will be considered for publication only if they are clearly of interest to our international readership and are not deemed more suitable for a regional audience.

Phytotherapy Research does not publish agricultural, phytochemical, structure elucidation, quality control or botanical identification papers unless directly pertinent to the pharmacological effects or overall safety of plant based medicines currently in use.

M. Simmonds

Editorial Board

Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew, UK

Prof. Monique Simmonds (OBE, BSC, PhD, DSc, FLS, FBS, FRES, FWIF), is Deputy Director of Science, at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and is Director of the Commercial Phytochemistry Unit.  She has over 30 years’ experience of research into different aspects of plant and fungal chemistry with an emphasis on the economic value of natural products, including quality control of medicinal plants (especially those used in traditional Chinese medicine) and insect-plant interactions.  Her current research is on the economic uses of plants/fungi, in particular their potential as pharmaceutical leads, especially anti-biotics, as well as uses in over–the-counter products such as cosmetics. This involves studying the chemistry of plants and fungi, the biological activities of extracts and isolated compounds, and using the new DNA based phylogenies to assist the selection of species that could contain compounds for the creation of new cosmetics. In many cases this involves studying what compounds help the plant protect themselves from UV damage, oxidative and water stress and using this knowledge to identify plant compounds that could provide a similar type of protection in human skin. Prof. Simmonds is also interested in the development of chemical and DNA authentication methods to check the quality of plant-derived products being sold as medicines, cosmetics and functional foods. She has over 370 publications and has co-authored patent for compounds in the area of malaria, cancer, pest control, cosmetics and has been involved in getting food, medicinal and cosmetic products to market. Her commercial focused research aims to increase the diversity of plants entering the trade and supporting human wellbeing through illustrating the economical importance of plants and fungal diversity. Prof. Simmonds is keen to improve our understanding of how plant chemistry influences different aspects of our wellbeing and helping to ensure the publication of medicinal plant research papers is paramount.

His research work has been featured by news agencies including BBC, MSNBC, CBS, ABC, Science News, etc. Dr. Srivastava’s laboratory has been working on chemoprevention of pancreatic cancer, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, brain cancer and melanoma, and demonstrated that some of the phytochemicals, such as piperlongumine, capsaicin, cucurbitacin B, benzyl isothiocyanate, phenethyl isothiocyanate, diindolylmethane and curcumin, suppress the growth of primary and metastatic tumors by inhibiting various oncogenic signalling pathways.

The main theme of his research is directed towards understanding the mechanisms that underlie the cellular and molecular basis of cancer and evaluating novel anti-cancer agents against various types of cancers. Ongoing studies along these lines in Dr. Srivastava’s laboratory is working towards identifying novel targets to develop new therapies for cancer.
