Nature Materials is a monthly multi-disciplinary journal aimed at bringing together cutting-edge research across the entire spectrum of materials science and engineering. Materials research is a diverse and fast-growing discipline, which has moved from a largely applied, engineering focus to a position where it has an increasing impact on other classical disciplines such as physics, chemistry and biology. Nature Materials covers all applied and fundamental aspects of the synthesis/processing, structure/composition, properties and performance of materials, where "materials" are identified as substances in the condensed states (liquid, solid, colloidal) designed or manipulated for technological ends.

Nature Materials provides a forum for the development of a common identity among materials scientists while encouraging researchers to cross established subdisciplinary divides. To achieve this, and strengthen the cohesion of the community, the journal takes an interdisciplinary, integrated and balanced approach to all areas of materials research while fostering the exchange of ideas between scientists involved in the different disciplines. Nature Materials is an invaluable resource for all scientists, in both academia and industry, who are active in the process of discovering and developing materials and materials-related concepts.

Nature Materials offers an engaging, informative and accessible product including papers of exceptional significance and quality in a discipline which promises to have great influence on the development of society in years to come.

Chief Editor: Vincent Dusastre

Vincent Dusastre gained his first degree in physical chemistry from the Université Paul Sabatier (Toulouse, France), followed by a MSci in materials science from the University of Kent (Canterbury, UK). His research interests during his PhD from University College London and postdoctoral experience at Imperial College London were in the design and investigation of the properties of oxide materials for gas-sensing and fuel-cell applications. He joined Nature in 1999 and launched Nature Materials in 2002. In addition to his duties as Chief Editor, he handles manuscripts in the areas of electrochemistry and materials for energy, including batteries, fuel cells, solar fuels, electro- and photocatalysis. Vincent is based in the London office.

Senior Editor: Luigi Martiradonna

Luigi Martiradonna received a first degree in electronic engineering from the Polytechnic University of Bari and a PhD in innovative materials and technologies from the University of Salento in Italy. Having been trained in nanotechnologies for quantum-dot-based optical devices, during his postdoctoral experience at the Institute of Industrial Science in Tokyo he became interested in photonic-crystal structures embedding colloidal nanocrystals. As a postdoctoral researcher and team leader of the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, he then worked on the development of technologies for the detection and stimulation of neuronal synaptic signals. At Nature Materials, which he joined in January 2013, Luigi handles manuscripts in the broad area of applied physics such as organic and inorganic electronics, photovoltaics, and neuromorphic systems. Luigi is based in the London office.

Senior Editor: Maria Maragkou

Maria Maragkou earned an MEng in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Patras, Greece, and a PhD in physics in 2010 from the University of Southampton, UK, with a thesis on exciton–polaritons in semiconductor microcavities. She then worked on quantum optics with epitaxial quantum dots as a postdoctoral researcher at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Spain) and at the École Normale Superiéure in Paris. At Nature Materials, which Maria joined in January 2015 after having worked with Nature Photonics for 6 months, she handles manuscripts in the areas of photonics, plasmonics and metamaterials. Maria is based in the London office.

Senior Editor: Amos Matsiko

Amos Matsiko obtained an MEng in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Sheffield and subsequently carried out his PhD and post-doctoral research at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland on biomaterials, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine for a range of musculoskeletal applications. He also carried out an industrial collaborative project with Integra LifeSciences developing nerve guidance conduits for peripheral nerve repair. Amos began his editorial career at Nature Communications in April 2016 and joined Nature Materials in June 2017. He handles manuscripts in the broad area of bioengineering including biomaterials, drug delivery and mechanobiology. Amos is based in the London office.

Senior Editor: Stephen Shevlin

Stephen Shevlin received his first degree in theoretical physics from the University of Birmingham, and completed his PhD in theoretical condensed matter physics focusing on atomic-scale wires at University College London. He then worked as a postdoctoral researcher on electronic materials at IBM Zurich and at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, before becoming interested in energy and oxide materials at Queen Mary, University of London, and University College London. At Nature Materials, which he joined in February 2017, Stephen handles manuscripts in the areas of materials chemistry, oxide interfaces and surfaces, ferroelectrics, porous materials, catalysis and energy harvesting. Stephen is based in the London office.

Associate Editor: Xin Li

Xin Li received her first degree in materials science and engineering from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China. She completed her PhD jointly at Georgia Institute of Technology (US) and University of Lorraine (France), studying epitaxy growth and optoelectronic applications of wide bandgap semiconductors. She continued to work in the Georgia Tech-CNRS UMI as a postdoctoral researcher, and expanded her interests to 2D materials, nanostructures and flexible devices. At Nature Materials, which she joined in April 2017, Xin handles manuscripts in the areas of nanomaterials, structural materials and mechanical properties. Xin is based in the Shanghai office.

Associate Editor: Bruno Castro

Bruno Castro earned a Bsc in Biochemistry from Lisbon University (Portugal) where he also completed a PhD in Chemistry, focusing on lipid phase separation and protein sorting in cell membrane model systems. He then moved to ICFO - The Institute of Photonic Sciences in Barcelona (Spain), where he studied immune cell receptors membrane organization and function using single-molecule and advanced fluorescence microscopies. Bruno became a scientific editor at Nature Communications in 2016 and joined Nature Materials in June 2017, where he handles manuscripts in soft matter and bioimaging. Bruno is based in the London office.

Associate Editor: Daniel McNally

Daniel McNally received a BSc in Physics and Astrophysics from University College Cork and a MSc in Physics from Trinity College Dublin in Ireland. He earned his PhD in Physics at Stony Brook University and Brookhaven National Laboratory focusing on strongly correlated materials, with a particular emphasis on neutron scattering. He continued to work on quantum materials using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering as a postdoctoral researcher at the Paul Scherrer Institut, Switzerland. At Nature Materials, which he joined in March 2018, Daniel handles manuscripts in correlated electron systems, topological materials and spintronics. Daniel is currently based in the New York office.

Associate Editor: Antonio Fornieri

Antonio Fornieri received a first degree in Physics from the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia and subsequently earned an MSc in Physics from the University of Pisa in Italy. He completed his PhD at Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa, Italy, with a thesis on electronic thermal transport in superconducting circuits. He then worked on topological superconductivity in two-dimensional superconductor/semiconductor heterostructures as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. He joined Nature Materials as a Locum editor in October 2019, and he handles manuscripts in the areas of photonics, plasmonics and metamaterials. Antonio is based in the London office.
