Yu-Ming Zhao Professor Natural Product Synthesis

Yu-Ming received his B.S. in chemistry from Lanzhou University with high honors in chemistry in 2005. Then, he continued to pursue his graduate studies with Professor Yong-Qiang Tu at the same university where he worked on the synthesis of complex alkaloids. After completing his doctorate in 2010, he spent around one and half years as a post-doctoral researcher at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology with Professor Jianwei Sun where he worked on the NHC-catalyzed methodology. In the winter of 2012, he moved to UC Berekeley to pursue his secondary post-doctoral studies in the laboratory of Professor Thomas J. Maimone where he worked on the total synthesis of complex diterpenes. In January of 2015, he joined the department of chemistry at Shaanxi Normal University as an associate professor and in 2019 he was promoted to full professor.

We are working on organic chemistry with specific research interests in the total synthesis of complex, biologically active natural products. Particular emphases will be placed on the development of rational designed and nature-inspired synthetic strategies and methods that will allow for the efficient synthesis of complex natural products. We are also interested to develop new methods for the synthesis of useful molecules, such as top-selling pharmaceuticals.
