The molecular packing, intermolecular interactions, and electron-transporting and photophysical properties of a series symmetrical alkoxy-substituted bis-1,3,4-oxadiazole derivatives (BOXD-o-OCH3, BOXD-m-OCH3, BOXD-D1, and BOXD-T1) are carefully investigated through a combination of experimental techniques and theoretical calculations here.

BOXD-6 molecules can self-assemble into both H- and J-aggregates at moderate concentration (∼10−4 M) and then transit to exclusive J-aggregates at higher concentration (∼10−3 M) in tetrahydrofuran.

The symmetric DAAD arrangement can enhance intramolecular charge-transfer from the side alkoxyl benzene to the central bi-1,3,4-oxadiazole moiety.

Ultrasound irradiation has been proved to influence gel properties at micro-levels. Different self-assembled structures from entangled fibers to tube-like structures and nanoparticles can be easily manipulated by tuning irradiation time and water bath temperature.
