Genome stability is essential for life and a vital tumour suppressive mechanism. Genomic instability can underlie both inherited cancer predisposition and sporadic tumorigenesis, and contributes to tumour heterogeneity and drug resistance. Research in Dr Staples’ laboratory focuses on the study of the cellular roles of a series of completely uncharacterised proteins that have been identified as novel genome stability factors, alongside their relevance to cancer. Furthermore, he hopes to exploit novel aspects of the DNA damage response to sensitise cancer cells to existing chemotherapies. This includes novel DNA repair factors, and components of other processes that impact indirectly on repair processes and genomic integrity.
