My research is centred on the use of state-of-theart X-ray diffractometers to carry out combinatorial studies of chemical systems. By using this equipment my research students can routinely determine crystal structures in less than an hour and can follow reactions involving solids in situ. My current interests include:- 1) Searching for reusable SO2 adsorbers to combat acid-rain. To this end we have carried out a detailed study of the structure and reactivity of microporous manganese complexes. This work has recently been extended to include related iron and vanadyl compounds. 2) Hydrogen peroxide, an environmentally friendly bleach. We are attempting to synthesise novel perhydrates and hydrogen-peroxide catalysts. This work has already led to the discovery of several new compounds, including two new ligands, which we isolated by applying fractional crystallisation techniques to low-purity off-the-shelf reagents.
