Between 10 and 30% of people infected with SARS-CoV-2 suffer from post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC; also known as long COVID). PASC can persist for months or years and includes conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, cerebrovascular diseases and metabolic diseases including type 2 diabetes. A new study reports a nonhuman primate model of metabolic PASC using SARS-CoV-2-infected African green monkeys (AGMs), which exhibits similar features to human metabolic PASC and can be explored to identify therapies. SARS-CoV-2 infection in AGMs was associated with early-onset hyperglycemia, which persisted for at least 18 weeks post-infection. Hyperglycemia was associated with a dysregulated blood chemokine signature. Infected animals also showed increased liver glycogen levels, which correlated with blood glucose levels.
