Photoinduced absorption spectroscopy is employed to distinguish decoloration and mineralization of methylene blue using titania and hematite photoanodes. The valence band potential is found to be directly related to oxidizability of the organic molecule. Titania can oxidize the methylene blue to CO2 by deep valence band potential whereas the oxidation stops at catechol by hematite modest valence band potential.
