A novel Cd-based coordination polymer constructed by viologen derivative and p-phthalic acid has been synthesized and characterized. By incorporating d10 metal ion and viologen derivative in the backbone of the as-synthesized compound, multifunctionality including photochromism, chemochromism as well as luminescent detection has been realized.
