At 7 pm on September 4, the 2024 graduate student meeting was held in the lecture hall on the fifth floor of the new building of the college. At the meeting, Professor Wang Sheng spoke as a teacher representative.
Professor Wang Sheng shared his scientific research insights with the graduate students and put forward some suggestions on scientific research and learning in combination with Newton's first law of motion, the uncertainty principle and the principle of least action.
Newton's first law shows that objects will remain stationary or in a state of uniform linear motion without external forces. Professor Wang Sheng linked this issue with graduate student learning and life, and told the graduate students to develop a proactive and persistent learning attitude from the beginning.
The uncertainty principle tells us that two Hermitian conjugate quantities in quantum mechanics cannot be accurately measured at the same time. Based on this principle, Professor Wang Sheng told the graduate students that the goal setting should not be too narrow, but should be clearer, more reasonable and conducive to their own growth. Secondly, they should always keep thinking, clarify their learning goals, think about the problems to be solved in their research, and always keep a positive mindset of discovering and solving problems in the process.
The principle of least action points out that the evolutionary path of a physical system is the path that minimizes the action. Professor Wang Sheng extended this principle to scientific research, telling new graduate students that they should find the most effective path to solve problems in scientific research, actively use the good academic environment of the School of Physics of Wuhan University, give full play to their subjective initiative, maintain close communication with their supervisors, strengthen academic exchanges and cooperation, and gain growth.
