Dr. Feng Wang is a Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the City University of Hong Kong. He received his BE (2001) and PhD (2006) degrees in Materials Science and Engineering from Zhejiang University under the supervision of Prof. Minquan Wang and Prof. Xianping Fan. He then carried out postdoctoral research work with Prof. Xiaogang Liu at the National University of Singapore and the Institute of Materials Research and Engineering in Singapore before joining the CityU faculty in 2012. His research interests include the design, synthesis, mechanistic investigation, and application of micro/nanostructured luminescent materials. Prof. Wang is a founding member of the Hong Kong Young Academy of Sciences, a Fellow of the Royal Chemical Society, and an awardee of the Hong Kong Research Grants Council Research Fellowship.

Abstract: Impurity doping represents an appealing strategy for creating highly tunable luminescence properties within a single host material. In this talk, I focus on our recent efforts to incorporate lanthanide and transition ions into inorganic crystals for achieving tunable emissions under different types of excitations, such as ultraviolet and near-infrared photons as well as mechanical action and electric field. We demonstrate rational control over luminescence processes and properties by leveraging characteristics of the host materials and their complex yet manageable interactions with various dopant ions. We show that these doped luminescent materials hold promise in many exciting applications in sensing, information security, and biomedical sciences.
