Dr.SydS.Peng,amemberoftheNationalAcademyofEngineering,wasborninTanwanandgraduatedfromStanfordUniversityandreceivedhisPh.D.in1970.HewastheChairofDepartmentofMiningEngineering,WestVirginiaUniversity,U.S.A.from1978to2006.HewasappointedasprofessorofHPUsince2010. Hehassupervised150researchandconsultingprojectsfromfederalandstategovernmentsandprivatecompanies,andauthoredandcoauthored4textbooksand332journalandproceedingsarticlesintheareasoflongwallmining,groundcontrol,andrespirabledust.Heinitiatedtheannualinternationalconferenceongroundcontrolinminingsince1981.Itisnowrecognizedallovertheworldasanannualforumforexchangeofinformationongroundcontrol.
