Sudan’s conflict is having major impacts on its fragile economy. We need accurate measures of these impacts to support conflict resolution and international aid efforts.

The past two years (2022–2023) have sadly witnessed a remarkable return of large-scale armed conflicts around the world. Armed conflicts — regardless of their scale — entail devastation. However, it is typically true that the bigger and more intense the conflict, the higher the casualties, greater the displacement of people, and the more adverse the economic consequences. However, the focus internationally on armed conflicts in terms of coverage, intervention and aid tends to be influenced by geopolitical factors, and some conflicts risk being overlooked. Sudan’s ongoing armed conflict is a prime example of this: it exacts substantial humanitarian and economic tolls, yet other major conflicts have garnered greater international attention.
