Effects of 1,2-diaminopropane on the formation of chelated copper on chrysocolla surfaces and its response to flotation

In this study, the effect of 1,2-diaminopropane (1,2-DAP) on the formation of chelated copper on chrysocolla surfaces and its response to flotation was investigated. The results showed that 1,2-DAP effectively activates chrysocolla. Micro-flotation test revealed that using 50–70 mg/L of 1,2-DAP as an activator and 1.8 × 10 mol/L of sodium isoamyl xanthate (SIAX) as a collector increased chrysocolla flotation recovery from 25 % to 86 %. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, zeta potential measurements, xanthate adsorption capacity, and time-of-flight secondary-ion mass spectrometry showed that after treated with 1,2-DAP, chelated copper was formed on chrysocolla through the interaction between C-N group with Cu(II), which promotes the effective adsorption of xanthate on chrysocolla surface. The additional adsorption of xanthate may be attributed to 1,2-DAP adsorption on chrysocolla, which shifted the surface potential positively. This shift was favorable for attracting negatively charged xanthate on the surface of chrysocolla. Meanwhile, the enhanced and stabilized presence of copper active sites on the surface of chrysocolla also facilitated the adsorption of more xanthates on the surface of chrysocolla, thus improving the hydrophobicity and floatability of chrysocolla.
